Google Ads conversion tracking not working: 9 fixes
Short answer: check the conversion status first, then confirm the tag fires with Tag Assistant, auto-tagging is on, and the action counts the way you expect. Many “missing” conversions are really reporting delays, a secondary action, or consent settings, not broken tags.

Start here: read the status
Google Ads shows a status for each conversion action. Labels vary by account, because Google has been updating them, so look for the meaning, not the exact word.
| Status you may see | What it usually means | First step |
|---|---|---|
| Recording conversions / Active | Conversions were seen recently | Nothing to fix. Check the numbers instead. |
| No recent conversions / Awaiting conversions | No conversions were recorded in the last 7 days | Check campaigns are running and the tag fires. Wait for traffic. |
| Unverified | Google has not confirmed the tag on your site | Run Tag Assistant on your landing page. |
| Tag inactive / Misconfigured / Needs attention | Google no longer sees the tag or it is set up wrongly | Reinstall or fix the tag, then check again. |

The 9 fixes
- Test the tag with Tag AssistantIn Google Ads open Goals, then Conversions Summary, choose Troubleshoot, enter a landing page URL (not the conversion page) and complete the conversion. Verified actions update in about 30 minutes.
- Check the tag is on every page and fires on the right triggerMake sure the Google tag or your Tag Manager container is on every page. If you use Tag Manager, use Debug live version, and use Tag coverage to find pages without a tag.
- Turn on auto-taggingGoogle’s setup guidance says to turn on auto-tagging in all your Google Ads accounts. Redirects and click trackers must pass the GCLID through to the landing page.
- Check how the action countsEvery counts each conversion after a click. One counts only one conversion per click. Google recommends Every for sales and One for leads. Changes apply to future conversions only.
- Check the conversion window and attributionDefaults are 30 days for click-through, 3 for engaged-view and 1 for view-through. Google Ads offers last click and data-driven attribution, and data-driven is the default for most conversion actions.
- Allow for reporting delayConversions can be reported up to 90 days after a click, depending on the window. End report date ranges at least 30 days ago, or longer if your window is longer, for complete data.
- Check imported GA4 key eventsImported GA4 key events are set to secondary by default so they are not counted twice for bidding. Your Google and Analytics accounts must be linked, with auto-tagging on.
- Check primary vs secondaryOnly primary actions count in the Conversions column and are used for bidding. If your action is secondary, it will not drive bidding.
- Check consent modeWhen visitors decline cookies, Google can model some conversions. Modelling needs a threshold of 700 ad clicks over 7 days per country and domain grouping, and consent mode must be implemented correctly.

|---|---|
| Click-through | 30 days |
| Engaged-view | 3 days |
| View-through | 1 days |
When it is not broken
Before you rebuild anything: status can take up to 48 hours to update after a correction, and conversions are reported by the date of the click, so recent days often look low and fill in later.
If Google Ads and GA4 still disagree, that is often attribution, not a fault. Read why GA4, Google Ads and Meta show different numbers.
Get a second pair of eyes
If the nine fixes do not solve it, our tracking audit checks the tags, events and imports end to end. In one audit we raised tracked lead events from 1 to 14 of 14 (PH Media Group case study).

Questions answered
Why does Google Ads show “no recent conversions”?
It means no conversions were recorded in the last 7 days. The usual causes are a recently created action, paused campaigns, low traffic or a tag that is not firing. Test with Tag Assistant.
How long does it take for conversions to show in Google Ads?
Tag status can take up to 48 hours to update after a fix, and conversions can be reported up to 90 days after the click depending on your window.
Should I use Every or One for conversions?
Google recommends Every for sales, because each purchase counts, and One for leads, because one person submitting twice should count once.
Why are my GA4 conversions not counted for bidding?
Imported GA4 key events are set to secondary by default so the same event is not counted twice for bidding. Make a primary action if you want it to drive bidding.
What is the default conversion window in Google Ads?
The click-through default is 30 days, engaged-view 3 days and view-through 1 day, according to Google’s help page.
