Why GA4, Google Ads and Meta show different sales numbers

3tools, 3 different rulebooks
90 daysdefault GA4 lookback for most key events
30 daysdefault Google Ads click-through window

Short answer: each tool counts sales by its own rules: different attribution models, look-back windows, dates and consent handling. They are not meant to match. Use your store or CRM as the source of truth, and treat each platform as a view of its own slice.

Tracking rescue: 0 purchases in GA4

Selling daily, reporting zero. Fixed and proven with test orders.

One sale, three reports

1A customer clicks a Meta adMeta may claim the sale
2Later clicks a Google adGoogle Ads may claim it too
3Then buysYour store records it once
4GA4 credits a channelBy its own attribution rules

Both ad platforms can claim the same sale, because each counts credit for its own ad. That is why adding up platform numbers usually gives more sales than your store recorded.

The rulebooks side by side

Meta change to know about: Meta’s developer blog says that from 12 January 2026 its Ads Insights API no longer returns the 7-day view and 28-day view windows. That is an API change, not a claim that Ads Manager defaults changed.

Seven reasons the numbers differ

  1. Different attributionEach tool decides which touch earns the credit, so the same sale can be credited to different sources.
  2. Different windowsA sale 20 days after a click counts in a 30-day window but not in a 7-day one.
  3. Different datesGoogle’s Universal Analytics help says Google Ads reports a conversion on the date of the click and Analytics reports it on the date of the conversion. Check how your own GA4 setup reports it.
  4. Different unitsThe same help page says Google Ads counts clicks and Analytics counts sessions.
  5. Consent and blockersVisitors who decline cookies and ad blockers can hide events from browser tags.
  6. Data thresholds and modellingGA4 can withhold some data to protect privacy, and models behaviour only above set volume thresholds.
  7. Duplicate or missing eventsA purchase that fires twice or not at all breaks any comparison. See our GA4 setup guide.

How to reconcile them

QuestionWhere to lookRule of thumb
How many orders really happened?Your store or CRMThis is the number that pays the bills
Which channel gets credit?GA4, with a clear attribution settingUse one view for comparisons over time
How is each ad platform doing?Ads Manager and Google AdsUse for in-platform decisions, not for totals
Is the business profitable on ads?MER: total revenue ÷ total marketing spendSee what is a good ROAS

Label every number. In a dashboard, mark each figure as “reported by the platform” or “confirmed in the store or GA4”. That one habit prevents most arguments about whose number is right.

Our reporting and dashboards service does exactly this. See also our Looker Studio (Data Studio) dashboard blueprint.

Questions answered

Why does Meta report more sales than my store?

Meta credits sales to its own ads using its own window, and Google may credit the same sale to its ads. Your store records each order once, so platform totals often add up to more than real orders.

Which number should I trust?

Trust your store or CRM for how many orders happened. Use GA4 for channel comparisons with a consistent setting and each ad platform for decisions inside that platform.

Why is GA4 lower than Google Ads?

They count differently: Google Ads credits Google Ads clicks, and GA4 credits channels by its attribution settings, may withhold small data sets and may miss visitors who decline consent.

What attribution window does GA4 use?

Google says most key events default to a 90-day lookback and acquisition key events default to 30 days, and you can change them.

How do I fix tracking differences?

First make sure purchase events fire once per order. Then agree on one source of truth, label platform-reported numbers, and review MER for overall performance.
