WooCommerce Google Ads conversion tracking, step by step
Short answer: pick one method (the Google for WooCommerce plugin, or Google Tag Manager with GTM4WP), create a purchase conversion action in Google Ads, make sure each order sends a transaction ID, value and currency, then test with Tag Assistant on the thank-you page. Using two methods at once is the most common reason purchases are counted twice.

The path of one order
If any step is missing, Google Ads sees fewer sales than you made, and its bidding learns from bad data.
Step 1: choose one method
Google warns against double-tagging when a content management system or plugin also manages tags. Choose one of these:
| Method | What it is | Good to know |
|---|---|---|
| Google for WooCommerce plugin | Google’s official plugin (formerly Google Listings & Ads) that syncs your product feed and runs Performance Max campaigns | Its WordPress.org listing says its Google tag feature enables conversion tracking, and mentions enhanced conversions. It does not mention GA4, so check what it sends. |
| Google Tag Manager with GTM4WP | GTM4WP is a free plugin that adds your GTM container and pushes ecommerce data to the data layer | Supports view_item, select_item, add_to_cart, remove_from_cart, view_cart, begin_checkout, add_shipping_info, add_payment_info and purchase |
| Manual Google tag | Paste the Google tag and conversion snippet yourself | Most control, most upkeep |

Step 2: create the conversion action
In Google Ads, open Goals, then Summary, and create a website conversion action for purchases. Google says the code method, installed through the Google tag or Tag Manager, is required for dynamic purchase amounts and transaction IDs, so choose that over a simple page-load trigger.
Step 3: send the right purchase fields
Google’s tag reference sets these rules for the purchase event:
| Field | Rule from Google |
|---|---|
transaction_id | Required. The unique identifier of the order |
value | Should equal the sum of item price times quantity. Shipping and tax are excluded |
currency | Required when you send a value. A 3-letter ISO 4217 code such as AUD or USD |
items | Listed as required |
Source: Google tag reference: events.
Why the transaction ID matters. Without it, a customer who reloads the thank-you page can be counted twice. Send one unique ID per order.
Step 4: turn on enhanced conversions
Enhanced conversions for web adds hashed customer data, such as an email address, to your conversion. Google lists three ways to set it up: the Google tag, Google Tag Manager, or the Google Ads API. You can send unhashed data and let Google normalise and hash it, or send data you have hashed yourself with SHA256. See our server-side tracking guide for how this fits with other platforms.
Step 5: protect the thank-you page from caching
The GTM4WP listing says thank-you pages that show a purchase are kept out of page caches, and that its “Reliable purchase tracking” option covers customers who leave before the thank-you page loads. It also notes that some gateways, such as PayPal, may need auto-return switched on. A page built with a theme or page builder is excluded from cache plugins, so check yours.
Step 6: test before you trust it
- Open Tag AssistantGoogle’s tool for checking that tags work.
- Place a real test orderGo all the way to the confirmation page.
- Check the tag fires on that pageYou should see the purchase with an ID, value and currency.
- Check the status in Google AdsOpen Goals, then Summary and look at the Status column. It can take time to update. See 9 fixes when conversions are missing.
- Compare with WooCommerceCount orders for the same dates in both places after a week.

Questions answered
How do I track purchases in Google Ads on WooCommerce?
Choose one tag method, create a purchase conversion action in Google Ads, send each order’s transaction ID, value and currency, then verify with Tag Assistant on the confirmation page.
Does the Google for WooCommerce plugin track conversions?
Its WordPress.org listing says its Google tag feature enables conversion tracking and mentions enhanced conversions. Check in Tag Assistant exactly what it sends on your store.
Do I need Google Tag Manager for WooCommerce?
No. It is one of three options. GTM with the GTM4WP plugin gives the most control and supports the standard ecommerce events, including purchase.
Why are my WooCommerce purchases counted twice?
Usually two tags fire, for example a plugin and a manually added snippet, or the transaction ID is missing so a page reload counts again. Remove one method and send a unique transaction ID.
What are enhanced conversions?
A Google Ads feature that adds hashed first-party data, such as an email address, to your conversion to improve measurement. Google offers setup through the Google tag, Tag Manager or the Google Ads API.
