Google Shopping ads: setup and costs for Australian stores
Short answer: Google Shopping ads show a product photo, title, price and store name in Google Search, the Shopping tab and Google Images. To run them in Australia you need a Google Merchant Center account with an approved product feed (GST-inclusive prices and delivery settings), linked to Google Ads. Shopping campaigns charge per click. We found no credible Australian cost benchmark, so set your budget from your own break-even return on ad spend.

What Google Shopping ads are
Google describes Shopping ads as listings that show a product photo, title, price, store name and more, so shoppers see what they are clicking on before they click. Unlike search ads, they do not use keywords. Google uses your Merchant Center product data to decide which searches your products match.
Heads up: Google says it may enrich Shopping ads with content from your landing pages, images and AI-generated text. You can ask Google to opt out, which usually takes 3 to 5 working days.
Where they appear
| Campaign type | Where ads can show | How you pay |
|---|---|---|
| Shopping campaign | Shopping tab, Google Search next to text ads, Google Images, and search partner sites if you opt in | Per click (CPC) |
| Performance Max | All of the above, plus YouTube, Display, Gmail, Demand Gen and Maps (local inventory ads) | Billed on performance, for example clicks or impressions |

What you need before you start
Google lists these requirements for Shopping ads:
- A Google Merchant Center account and a Google Ads account, linked together
- Products, promotions and website that follow the Shopping ads policies, which are separate from normal Google Ads policies
- Product data sent to Merchant Center and refreshed at least every 30 days
- A working, professional website. Google rejects sites that are under construction, parked or broken
The Comparison Shopping Service (CSS) rule applies in the European Economic Area and Switzerland, not in Australia. Australian stores work with Google directly.
On Shopify, the Google & YouTube app can sync products to Merchant Center. See our Shopify Google integration guide. On WooCommerce, Google’s own plugin does the same. See our WooCommerce tracking guide.
Product feed rules for Australia
Your feed is your ad. These attributes come from Google’s product data specification:
| Attribute | Required? | Notes |
|---|---|---|
id, title, description, link, image_link | Always | Title and image do most of the selling |
price | Always | Outside the US and Canada, prices must include tax. In Australia that means GST-inclusive |
availability | Always | Pre-order items also need availability_date |
brand | Most new products | Optional for products with no brand, and for films, books and music |
gtin | If the product has one | Barcode number. Strongly recommended for everything else |
mpn | Only if there is no GTIN | Manufacturer part number |
condition | If used or refurbished | Optional for new products |
is_bundle, multipack | For bundles and multipacks | Australia is one of the countries where this is required |

Delivery settings are required in Australia. Google says Australian merchants must set up delivery settings or add delivery costs in Merchant Center. Missing delivery details is a common reason products get rejected.
Free listings vs Shopping ads
Free listings
- No cost per click
- Can show on the Shopping tab, Search, Images, Lens and your Business Profile
- Google does not guarantee they show
- Same Merchant Center feed
Shopping ads
- You pay per click
- Paid ad slots on Search, the Shopping tab and Images
- You control budget and bids
- Same Merchant Center feed
Google says free listings and Shopping ads can run side by side, so turn free listings on as soon as your feed is approved. It costs nothing and shows you which products get impressions before you spend.
Shopping campaign or Performance Max?
| Shopping campaign | Performance Max | |
|---|---|---|
| Control | More. You pick bids and product groups | Less. Google decides placements and bids |
| Reporting | Clear product and search term data | Less detail by channel |
| Reach | Shopping placements on Google | All Google channels, including YouTube and Gmail |
| Needs | A feed and a budget | A feed, images, text, ideally video, and enough conversion data |
| Good for | New stores, tight budgets, learning which products sell | Stores with reliable purchase tracking and steady sales |
Our usual order for a new Australian store: free listings first, then a Shopping campaign on your best sellers, then Performance Max once tracking is proven and you have regular sales. Keep each product in one campaign type while you test, so you can tell what worked.
Tracking comes first. Performance Max bids on the sales it can see. If purchases are not tracked properly, it learns from bad data. Check yours with our free tracking checklist.
What Google Shopping costs in Australia
Shopping campaigns charge per click. Google sets no minimum spend. You choose a daily budget.
No Australian benchmark. We could not find a credible Shopping cost benchmark for Australia from a named source. Published figures are global, US or European and disagree widely. For reference, Smarter Ecommerce’s European data (over 4,000 Performance Max campaigns) shows a Shopping cost per click of about €0.34 for September to October 2026. Do not plan Australian budgets on it.
What matters is whether each sale pays back. Work out your break-even first:
Break-even return on ad spend by gross margin
Calculated as 1 divided by gross margin. Below this, ads lose money on the first sale.

| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| 25% margin | 4.00x |
| 40% margin | 2.50x |
| 50% margin | 2.00x |
| 65% margin | 1.54x |
For one US Shopify store we manage, Google ads returned about 4.02x in September 2026. See the Chinook Footwear case study. Your number depends on your margin, price and product. For search ad costs by industry, see how much Google Ads costs in Australia.

- Week 2: turn on free listingsFree, and shows you which products get impressions.
- Week 2: launch one Shopping campaignYour 20 to 50 best sellers with healthy margins. Set a daily budget you can afford to lose while learning.
- Weeks 3 to 4: cut and keepExclude products and search terms that spend without selling. Raise budget only on products above break-even.

Questions answered
Are Google Shopping ads available in Australia?
Yes. Australian stores advertise directly with Google through Merchant Center and Google Ads. The Comparison Shopping Service rule only applies in the European Economic Area and Switzerland.
How much do Google Shopping ads cost in Australia?
You pay per click and choose your own daily budget. We found no credible Australian cost benchmark, so set spend from your break-even return on ad spend: 1 divided by your gross margin.
Do Google Shopping prices need to include GST?
Yes. Google’s product data specification says prices outside the US and Canada must include tax, so Australian feed prices should include GST.
What is the difference between free listings and Shopping ads?
Both use the same Merchant Center feed. Free listings cost nothing but are not guaranteed to show. Shopping ads are paid per click and appear in ad slots.
Should I use a Shopping campaign or Performance Max?
A Shopping campaign gives more control and clearer reports, which suits new stores. Performance Max reaches more Google channels but needs reliable purchase tracking and steady sales to work well.
How often do I need to update my product feed?
Google requires up-to-date product data at least every 30 days. Most store apps sync daily or faster, which also keeps prices and stock accurate.
