Shopify GA4 integration: native app vs Tag Manager
Short answer: for most stores, use Shopify’s Google & YouTube app: Google calls connecting your web stream through it “strongly preferred”. Use Google Tag Manager in a custom pixel only if you need several ad platforms or custom events and can accept its limits. The old Google Analytics field in Online Store preferences has been turned off, so remove any leftover ID.

The three routes
Google’s help pages say Shopify turned off its old Google Analytics integration. Tags that were not migrated by 2 February 2025 were converted to a custom pixel, which can reduce measurement quality.
Side by side
| Google & YouTube app | GTM in a custom pixel | |
|---|---|---|
| Setup | Install the app and connect your GA4 web stream and Google Ads account | Paste your GTM code into a new custom pixel, subscribe to customer events and push them to the data layer |
| Events | Google lists extra events the app adds: view_item_list, remove_from_cart, view_cart and add_shipping_info. For Google Ads it suggests purchase, add to cart and checkout started | You choose and build every event yourself |
| Support | Official Shopify app | Shopify says it does not support adding or using custom pixels |
| Environment | App pixels run in a strict sandbox | Custom pixels run in a lax sandbox |
| Best for | Most stores that mainly use Google | Stores with several ad platforms, or that need custom data |

What the GTM route cannot do
Shopify’s own tutorial for adding Tag Manager as a custom pixel lists these limits:
- Tag Assistant’s troubleshoot feature does not detect Google tags inside custom pixels
- You cannot add custom data to standard events
- GA4 outbound link tracking does not work
- Checkout data needs a UI extension to reach web pixels
- GTM needs at least one tag and one trigger

Clean up the old setup
- Open Online Store, then PreferencesFind the Google section.
- Look for a legacy IDGoogle says to open the Google & YouTube section, click Change and delete any old UA-style ID.
- Check Customer events for a leftover custom pixelAn auto-converted pixel may still be sending data.
- Make sure only one method is liveTwo methods double-count sales. See our Shopify GA4 setup guide.
Checkout scripts changed too. Shopify’s changelog says script tags, additional scripts and checkout.liquid are deprecated on the thank-you and order status pages: 28 August 2025 for Plus stores and 26 August 2026 for non-Plus stores. Use web pixels or app pixels instead.
Consent still applies
Shopify’s privacy help says non-essential data is collected only after consent under opt-in settings. Its cookie banner covers Shopify’s own tools, including Shopify pixels, while manually or app-added third-party pixels may need separate consent logic. This is not legal advice. See our server-side tracking guide for how consent interacts with server events.
Which route should you pick?
Use the Google & YouTube app if you
- Mainly run Google Ads and want the official setup
- Want fewer things to maintain
- Do not need custom events
- Want Shopify-supported tools
Use GTM in a custom pixel if you
- Run Meta, TikTok and Google together
- Need custom events or data
- Have someone to maintain the container
- Accept the limits above
