How much do Facebook and Instagram ads cost in Australia?
Short answer: published Meta benchmarks put a click at about US$0.60 for traffic campaigns and a lead at about US$27 across industries. These are mostly US and global samples, and we found no credible Australia-only benchmark. Your real cost depends on your industry, audience and season. What matters most is whether your cost per sale beats your break-even.

Why Australian costs can differ
Most published samples are from the USA or the whole world, so treat them as a starting point, not a promise.
Search is not Meta. Statista reports that Australia had the highest average search cost per click in Asia-Pacific in December 2024. That figure is for search ads, so it does not tell us what Meta costs. It is a reason to track your own numbers from week one.
What drives your cost
Pushes cost up
- A narrow or crowded audience
- Weak or tired creative
- Lead or purchase goals (they target people more likely to act)
- Busy sale periods such as EOFY, Click Frenzy and Boxing Day
- Missing or broken conversion tracking
Brings cost down
- Clear offers and strong creative
- A well-sized audience with room to learn
- Good tracking so Meta can find more buyers
- Landing pages that convert
- Testing one change at a time
Tracking matters more than most people expect. If Meta cannot see your sales, it cannot find more buyers. Our Shopify GA4 setup guide covers the basics.
Work out your break-even first
Break-even ROAS is 1 divided by your gross margin. Find yours before you judge any benchmark.

| 25% margin | 4.00x |
| 40% margin | 2.50x |
| 60% margin | 1.67x |
Read it like this: one published sample of ecommerce brands reports a median ROAS of 1.86. If your margin is 40%, your break-even is 2.5x, so a 1.86x return would lose money. The “typical” number can be unprofitable for you.

How to cut wasted Meta spend
- Fix tracking firstConfirm purchases or leads reach Meta, ideally through the pixel and the Conversions API.
- Test one thing at a timeChange the audience or the creative, not both at once.
- Judge on your numbersCompare cost per sale with your break-even, not with a global median.
- Give ads enough spend to learnCut what fails only after it has had a fair chance.
- Review every weekA short weekly review catches overspend early.

Questions answered
How much should I spend on Facebook ads in Australia?
There is no single number. Start from your margin: break-even return on ad spend is 1 divided by your gross margin, so a 40% margin needs 2.5x just to break even. Set a test budget you can afford to lose while you learn what a lead or sale costs for your business.
Is there an Australian benchmark for Meta ad costs?
We could not find a credible, published Australia-only benchmark. The figures in this guide come from LocaliQ and Influee, citing Triple Whale, and are mostly US or global samples in US dollars. Use them as a rough guide and compare them with your own account.
Why do my Facebook ad costs change during the year?
Costs follow competition. More advertisers bid before big sale periods, so the same audience can cost more. Plan budgets around your own sale calendar and compare like with like, for example the same month last year.
What is a good ROAS for Facebook ads?
It depends on your margin. One published sample of about 35,000 ecommerce brands reports a median ROAS of 1.86 across 2025, but your break-even point matters more than any median. If your break-even is 2.5x, a 1.86x return loses money.
Should a new store use Meta or Google Ads first?
Many stores start with Google Shopping and search because those shoppers are already looking, and add Meta to reach people who are not. The right order depends on your product, margin and budget, which a free audit call can work out.
